THE WEED SONG - Written by Paul Bura.
THE WEED SONG I wrote as a send-up country and
western song as I was working as a singer/poet in THE COLEY band. I
wrote it – as I remember – in about half an hour when I lived in Herne
Bay in Kent. That song (which featured on the jazz album: GOODBYE BRAINS)
got many laughs but the lead guitarist – Pete Bocking – had to hide
behind the amps as he detested country and western and was a dedicated
modern jazz man. He didn’t stand a chance though as every one knew that
he used to be lead guitarist with LONNIE DONOGAN!

STUTTERING SAM
STUTTERING SAM I recorded at Rabbit Studios in
Canterbury Cathedral in the Precincts. It was recorded on a backing
loop (played and recorded by Bernie Shaw) and Bernard Shaw for some
reason just let it run. So what you hear at the end of the song is pure
ad-lib on my part…well I had to do something!

ENOUGH TO WAKEN THE DEAD
ENOUGH TO WAKEN THE DEAD was also recorded on the album GOODBYE BRAINS with
Barry Cole writing and arranging (also playing tenor sax, flute and
alto sax). The poem was recorded in sections. Unfortunately I always
ended on an upward vocal which, when I performed it live, I didn’t do.
Oh well: it is what it is!
