A RUSH OF POETS TO THE HEAD
Poets came
Climbing down the mountains
From each and every byway
They hiked every path
Every highway
Poets came
By train and boat
And plane
Up out of the drain
In the pouring rain, they came
Poets came
By car and coach
Warning: Danger, do not approach!
From every guttering
Writing poems and muttering
Poets came
From every heart
And every light-chink
From every book of verse
The worse for drink, I think
Poets came
From every sofa
Hidden with the fluff and the filthy leuka
In through the window
In through the door
Poets came
Tumbling up with the plumbing
Up through the crack in the floor
In from the sea with
Davy Jones’ locker
Poets came
Out of thin air
Playing cards and soccer
Swam with salmon
In order to get home
Poets came
In vast crowds
Or quietly alone
Down from the trees
To the jungle floor
Poets came
Already with drugs
But ready to score more
From every creed
And every race
Poets came
From all over
The place
They came and they came
Some mad some sane
And never one the bloody same
They kept on coming
Until the earth’s crust
Was shattered with the sound
Of poetic lust…
[PAUSE]
Which, quite frankly,
Scared the shit out of me!
